Power Factor - What does it mean to you?

Power Factor is used to describe the energy efficiency of the power being used in your home or business. For example, a .59 Power Factor means that only 59% of the electricity that is being drawn thru your meter is being used effectively, the other 41% is being wasted!

A very good Power Factor is .90 (90%) or better. When your Power Factor is low, it causes a strain on your electric distribution system and the electric wiring in your home or business. This strain heats up the wires and panels and causes line losses, forcing you to pay for electricity lost in heat dissipation that you’re not using! Therefore increasing the power factor is the key to saving money on electricity.

Electrical motors produce a magnetic field that causes the electricity to go from the grid to the motor and back to the grid. This happens 60 times every second.

Every time there is electricity traveling through the wires there are losses. That type of electricity is called reactive power.

What the capacitors located inside the Power-Save unit will do is to recycle the electricity that otherwise will go back to the grid and redirect it back to the house for further use.  In essence, the Power-Save is like a recycling box.

Here is what the Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. states on their website regarding Power Factor:

Power Factor measures how effectively your operation uses electrical power. Poor power factor means your facility is using and paying for more electricity than it needs while doing the same amount of work. The net result is higher demand charges on your electric bill and overtaxing your internal wires and transformers.

The Power-Save unit consistently brings your Power factor to .90 (90%) or better, thus saving you money by reducing your electric bill.
